The SIMAD Institute of Global Health (SIGHt) took part in two consecutive events in Nairobi this September: the Mortality Estimation Initiative Workshop, held from 9–11 September 2026 at Villa Rosa Kempinski, and the Community of Practice (CoP) Meeting for Mortality Estimation in Humanitarian Settings, held from 12–13 September 2026 at the Novotel, Nairobi.
The workshop was organised by a consortium led by Save the Children, IMPACT Initiatives, and Evidence for Change (E4C) Kenya. Over three days, government officials, humanitarian practitioners, researchers, and donors came together to shape the strategic priorities for mortality estimation in humanitarian settings, from methods and localisation to capacity and sustainability. The Somalia delegation included SIMAD Institute of Global Health, SIMAD University Somalia, Somali National University (SNU), and the Ministry of Health Somalia, alongside E4C as regional partner.
Immediately following the workshop, the CoP brought together local and national actors from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, together with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Johns Hopkins University, IMPACT Initiatives, Shift Consultancy, and Save the Children, to consolidate its peer-learning work and agree on its roadmap for the next phase. The CoP is coordinated by E4C.
