The SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt), in collaboration with eHealth Somalia and the Ministry of Health, successfully co-organized a roundtable discussion on the implementation of the national transformation plan (NTP) for the health sector (2025-2029).

This high-level event brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including government officials, national health policymakers, academic institutions, and healthcare leaders. The discussions focused on the opportunities, challenges, and strategic way forward for transforming Somalia’s healthcare system over the next five years.

Mohamed Hussein, a research associate at SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) and a Ph.D. student at Mahidol University, Thailand, recently participated in an intensive weeklong training program at the Taiwan International Healthcare Training Center (TIHTC). This program brought together 7 Ph.D. scholars under the leadership of Prof. Carol from Mahidol University for a hands-on exploration of Taiwan’s healthcare system, digital health innovations, and patient-centered care models.

Researchers and students from the SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) recently participated in a collaborative workshop organized by the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) and the Ministry of Health. The discussion focused on identifying and addressing the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing healthcare services in Somalia.

The SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt), through its Digital Health Program Coordinator, recently conducted an insightful workshop on Understanding Research Types and How to Publish. This session provided a beginner-friendly introduction to the fundamentals of scholarly writing, guiding participants on how to navigate the research process, select suitable publication formats, and successfully submit their work to academic journals.

Dr. Najib Isse Dirie, Senior Research Associate at SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt), represented SIGHt at the Joint Annual Review Meeting in Health Sector Somalia, organized by the Ministry of Health – Somalia. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, health leaders, and international organizations, to assess the country’s healthcare progress, identify existing challenges, and explore strategic solutions.

The Director of the SIMAD Institute for Global Health is honored and delighted to have served as a facilitator in the recently concluded five-day hands-on training on “Scientific Manuscript Writing Workshop” organized by the Somalia National Institute of Health. This workshop provided an invaluable platform for young, aspiring researchers to exchange knowledge and explore effective strategies for advancing the country’s development through impactful research dissemination.

In a significant stride towards advancing global health research, the SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) partnered with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) for a collaborative research conference in Nairobi. The event gathered international experts from renowned research institutions and Kenyan-based organizations, highlighting pivotal studies funded by the UK Humanitarian Initiative Hub (UKHIH). This collaboration aims to bolster research capacities and promote public health advancements.

SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) organized a collaborative forum focused on enhancing health research in Somalia. The event brought together officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, healthcare organization leaders, doctors, and researchers to discuss the need for a unified agenda in advancing medical research. The discussions emphasized the role of healthcare institutions and communities in shaping the future of health research and policy.

SIMAD University Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) proudly celebrates a significant milestone as it marks the 25th anniversary of SIMAD University. The event was officially concluded by Dr. Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud, the first pioneer and one of the founding members of the university. In a heartfelt speech, Dr. Xasan reflected on the various phases of SIMAD’s journey since its establishment. He emphasized the university’s critical role in advancing knowledge, fostering community development, and producing national and international leaders and experts across various fields.

Dr. Ali Haji Adam, Somalia’s Minister of Health and Member of Parliament, visited the SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) at SIMAD University, Town Campus. He was warmly received by Dr. Abdikarim Mohaidin Ahmed, the Rector of SIMAD University, who provided an overview of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Sumait Hospitals, and the groundbreaking research initiatives undertaken by SIGHt. During his visit, the Minister commended SIMAD University and SIGHt for their unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare education and research in Somalia. The discussion emphasized SIGHt’s pivotal role in addressing pressing health challenges and driving innovation for national development.
